About the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The Matthew 25 movement is the shared vision of Presbyterian mission in the PC(USA).

23 longsidebar2

For over 200 years, Presbyterians have been responding to the call of Jesus Christ, taking the gospel into all the world and bearing witness to Christ’s saving love to the ends of the earth.

Today, we believe the Holy Spirit is still on the move, calling us to share what God is doing in the world.

The PC(USA) aims to help multiply this commitment to radical and fearless movement-making through one or more of these three focuses:

Building Congregational Vitality

A community’s vitality is primarily its spiritual strength and capacity for intentional work. Vitality is evident in a worshiping community or organization when its structural systems, finances and practices are aligned in such a way that the community is actively engaged in the mission of God in their local community and the world.

The PC(USA) challenges its congregations to deepen and energize their faith by actively engaging with their communities.

Dismantling Structural Racism

Structural racism is the normalizing of racism within institutions and structures. Once racism is structural and institutional (as it is in the United States), it creates ongoing, persistent inequality.

The PC(USA) is committed to fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color.

Eradicating Systemic Poverty

Systemic poverty refers to the economic exploitation of people who are poor through laws, policies, practices and systems that perpetuate their impoverished status. We live in a world and country where not all have equal access to primary resources like clean water, air, fresh food, education and affordable housing.

As a church committed to faith-in-action, the PC(USA) is working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate the economic exploitation of people who are poor.

Why “Matthew 25”?

2022-pns-BroadStreetFoodPantryLettuce

The Matthew 25 vision focuses on Matthew 25:31–46, the parable of the sheep and goats, in which Jesus clarifies that what we do matters to God and how we treat others is paramount. When we welcome others, we receive Christ; when we bring together people who are divided, we do God’s reconciliation work.

The PC(USA) believes that we are called to serve Jesus by contributing to the well-being of the most vulnerable in all societies — rural and urban, small and large, young and not-so-young. From affordable housing to community gardens to equitable educational and employment opportunities to healing from addiction and mental illness to enacting policy change —
there is not just one way to be a part of the Matthew 25 movement.
